Breaking a rental lease

Breaking a lease refers to vacating a property before the fixed term lease ends. Tenants usually break their lease if their circumstances drastically change, eg: interstate job transfer or separation from a partner.

When breaking a fixed term, residential tenancy lease, you should be aware that you may incur some break lease costs. These costs may include advertising and a pro rata letting fee.

If you are thinking of breaking your lease or if you are unsure of your obligations as a tenant in this situation, you should consult your property manager.
